The Ascians also taught the ancient Allag the means to bind primals. The Scions seek to repair relationships to stop conflicts that lead to primal summoning while Varis seeks to exterminate the tribes of people that have summoned a primal, ignoring the fact there are factions within each tribe that oppose summoning rituals. While both the Scions and Emperor Varis seek to stop summonings, their methods differ greatly. Gaius van Baelsar hoped to achieve a permanent means through the Ultima Weapon's ability to absorb primals. This is also one of the reasons behind the Garlean campaign to destroy the primals, according to Emperor Varis.

The Scions of the Seventh Dawn thus strive to eliminate any primals that manifest. Ifrit's thralls are known as "tempered", which has come to be the default term for such thralls, as violent Sylphs have been referred to as "tempered in the levin light of Ramuh".ĭue to the presence of primals in Eorzea and the massive amount of energy needed to summon them, the flux of aether over Silvertear Falls has been disrupted and the land of Eorzea will slowly perish if this process is not reversed. As of Endwalker, four such terms are known, at least in regards to the thralls under a primal's will: Leviathan's "drowned", Ramuh's "touched" (as in "touched" by the primal's divine influence), Odin's "sundered" (due to how his blade tears one "asunder"), and Lakshmi's "dreaming" (in reference to the "blissful dream" that she offers her thralls). This may be due to the fact its summoners have already been tempered to be loyal to the Garlean Empire and primals cannot temper someone that is already enthralled by another entity.ĭuring Live Letter XXVII, it was mentioned each primal has a term correlating to its element and their form of tempering. A variation of primals created by Fandaniel, called Lunar Primals, seem to lack the ability to temper others, or at the very least, do not actively try to temper others. While those gifted with the Echo are immune, their soul's aether may still be consumed by a nearby primal if they ever lose their mortal form. Other primals, notably Ifrit, actively seek out people to temper.

Usually this is an intentional process, but some primals (such as Ramuh) have shown distaste for it, implying it is a natural byproduct of their summoning (as only the sylphs who partook in Ramuh's summoning were tempered by the Lord of Levin). Once summoned, primals can " temper" other beings, instilling fanatical loyalty and creating a secure wellspring of faith. A primal can also be summoned into a structure or be created in the image of their namesake. While usually an embodiment of the summoner's desire, there are cases where the summoner transforms into a primal. The aether can also be acquired via other tools, such as the enigmatic horn and tablet stored on Seal Rock, or the eye of a great wyrm. Unlike the Ancients, the new races that now inhabit the world have little aether, and the ritual requires an ample supply-the most convenient being crystals. They developed the technique of primal summoning and taught it to beast races in the form of praying for the aid of their deity, altering the process to revolve around faith rather then conception. Three Ancients who survived the sundering with their souls intact-Emet-Selch, Elidibus, and Lahabrea-reformed themselves as the Ascians to conduct Umbral Calamities to restore their original world.

The pair's conflict sundered the world into the Source and its thirteen shards.

This forced the Convocation of Fourteen to summon Zodiark to avert the Final Days and Hydaelyn from Venat and her followers to imprison the former, both being products of a mass sacrifice. When the Final Days of Etheirys occurred, the Ancients' creation magick was warped as their fear-driven mental states caused them to unconsciously bring to life monsters based on their imaginings. The Ancients, possessing vast amounts of aether in their being, possesses creation magick that enable them to manifest beings from aether. An example of the devastation a primal can bring by simply existing is The Burn, a region between Othard and Garlemald where, after countless summonings, was turned into an uninhabitable desert of crystal dust. Due to the nature of their existence, a primal must consume aether from its surroundings, eventually rendering the surrounding area lifeless and uninhabitable, thus becoming a threat to the world. Primals are constructs of concentrated aether made manifest by the will of the summoner in the form of legendary figures or mythical creatures.
